The summer can be a joyful time of spending moments with our grandchildren, going on a luxurious vacation, or tending to our beautiful gardens at home. It can also be a dangerous time for seniors if the proper precautions aren’t taken. The following is taken from the Care.com article, “12 Summer Safety Tips for Seniors” by Gillian Kruse and lists several ways we can take steps to ensure we have a fun and healthy summer. Here are some great tips that aging adults can use to make sure they have a fun, safe summer.

Stay Hydrated

Remember to drink plenty of water often, and be sure to pack extra for those long summer drives.

Talk to Your Doctor

Check with your medical team to make sure any medications you are on won’t be affected by higher temperatures especially if you don’t have air conditioning in your home.

Stay in Touch

High temperatures can be life threatening, so communication plays an important role in ensuring the safety of aging adults. Seniors should let friends and family know if they’ll be spending an extended period of time outdoors, even if they’re only gardening.

Meet Your Neighbors

Get in touch with those that live in your neighborhood and see if a younger neighbor can check on you occasionally! The extra company and friendship will be an added bonus!

Know the Risks of Hyperthermia

Be particularly cautious about abnormally high body temperatures- a condition known as hyperthermia. Know the warning signs and get medical attention immediately if you or anyone you know is experiencing these symptoms of heat stroke:

• Nausea and vomiting
• Headache
• Heavy breathing or a rapid pulse
• Fainting

Dr. Ronan Factora of the Cleveland Clinic says, “Elderly individuals are more prone to heat stroke because their bodies have difficulty regulating their temperatures.” Be sure to ask for medical help, get out of the heat, lie down and place ice packs on your body.

Exercise Smart

Make sure to wear the proper clothing and protective gear when outdoors. Keep track of time. Make sure to drink even more water than usual when exercising. Get outdoor exercise earlier in the morning or later in the evening.

If you follow these tips, there’s no reason you can’t have a fun-filled summer!
