According to an article published in Futurity, neurodegenerative conditions, such as dementia, can increase health care expenditures more than two fold over the expenditures of general aging. This was discovered in a study by researchers, who simulated the costs and course of the epidemic of dementia currently facing families in the United States.

The research further suggests that most of this financial burden will be carried by the families affected, rather  than government insurance programs.
